Hi All - it’s been a while.
Trad British Summer is going even greater than manifested. This has been the best Summer weather wise in the past half a decade probably, so if you’re reading this from the greatest country in the world, I hope you have been enjoying it.
I certainly have, in hedonistic ways that I have not enjoyed a Summer in a long time. There has been a fair amount of booze, some smoke and various other substances ingested which people can debate as to whether they are ‘healthy’ or not. And that’s the point of this letter.
As you know, we like our definitions here, so let me ask you this…
What is health? And more importantly, what is the point of it?
Health
A state of being which allows you to enjoy, extract and experience the most from life which you possibly can.
The Point of Health
To be able to enjoy, extract and experience the most from life which you possibly can.
Undoubtedly any dictionary definitions of health will talk about being free from ailments, illnesses, injuries, etcetera. But those are all in service of the said end. The point of health is health: health is life.
So to follow on from that: how can you be ‘healthy’ if you do not enjoy, extract and experience the most from life which you possibly can?
You can of course see where I am going with this.
You dial in your circadian rhythms to sleep well. You eat a nutrient-dense diet to be lean and energised. You train hard to be fit, strong and powerful. You follow supplement protocols to DHT maxx, libido maxx, cognition maxx. For what? To then just stick to and go through all of those routines and protocols neurotically, over and over, for time ever more?
Life is for living (as cliché and gay as that is) and health is a state of high consciousness and energy that allows you to do so. The point of having the routine is so you are able to break it. The point of following the protocol is to build robustness to be able to survive without it.
You should be able to stay up all night on a night that’s worth doing so. You should be able to raise a glass to an occasion that’s worth drinking to. You should be able to indulge in excess food when your soul desires. You should be able to play (responsibly) with your consciousness and take some substances that give you a different experience of this existence and yourself. When you are healthy you are not just able to withstand these experiences in moderation, these experiences actually enhance your life - which if we’re going by our definitions actually makes you healthier overall.
If you live the life and follow the protocols prescribed by these letters than you should be more than robust enough to enjoy your Summer in whatever way you hedonistically want to. Therefore I encourage you to do so. Practice moderation where you can. Try to get a good night’s sleep and nourish yourself well 80% of the time. Try to do some kind of training/exercise - in addition to general movement - everyday. And for a couple of months you will be just fine. Your testosterone is not going to drop off a cliff, your blood pressure isn’t going to fly off the charts - if anything your biomarkers will improve because you’ve let go of the reigns and are (hopefully) in a pretty stress free state: as much as life allows.
The healthiest thing you can do on this Summer’s day may very well be to go for a drink with the boys. Just make sure you get up and handle business tomorrow morning regardless.
