1. Addiction is when you have lost the freedom to abstain.
Under this definition, when we think about it, we are addicted to so many things we did not even realise we were; that episode of our favourite Netflix series before bed, that cup of coffee in the morning, that warm shower, that chocolate bar every Friday night. We must be aware of our addictions, and practise abstinence when needed in order to keep us free from them.
2. If you want to feel ‘in control’ of a situation, you are better channelling your focus inward than outward.
It is much harder to control events than it is to control our perception and reaction of events. This is not to say we should not try to change the external world for the better and to our favour, but often times this can be futile. Much better, is to accept the externalities outside of our control, and focus inward instead.
3. “Man is pushed by drives but pulled by values” – Viktor Frankl
As you are propelled through life by your ambition and desires, there will continuously be opportunities to alter the course slightly, to give attention to one thing or another. What decides that which we steer towards in these cases, are our values. Have your constitution in order, to ensure you are pulled by that which is good.
The internal work is the most important.
Have a blessed Sunday.
